Balancing bills - top tips

  • Pay energy bills by Direct Debit, it's usually cheaper, or even discounted, and means no more red bills.

  • If you get an `estimated' bill, always check the `actual' reading; this way you won't face huge bills once the meter is finally read.

  • Get an annual household maintenance policy; many insurers offer them and, depending on which one you choose, you could be covered for blocked toilets, boiler breakdowns, central heating problems, and plumbing and drains, all for around £20 a month.

  • Keep an `emergency' savings fund for expensive costs, like the boiler breaking down or flooding caused by frozen pipes. Stick the money in an instant access account to earn interest.
